Fido’s Thanksgiving Feast

I truly am thankful for my two dogs. Even though I love cooking for them on a regular basis I wanted to make a Thanksgiving feast that would give them something to be thankful for while expressing my gratitude for having a couple of good friends to come home to everyday. Life would not be the same (and awfully boring) without them. However, I didn’t want to get too carried away. I have people to cook for too! Below are 4 simple and (like always) nutritious recipes to create a one of a kind feast for your pooch.

Dog Thanksgiving

Apple Stuffed Honey Glazed Salmon:

This dish uses salmon as the protein source.  It also features parsley (packed with vitamin B) and cinnamon (high in antioxidants, good for dental hygiene and digestion).  Apples are not only a sweet treat, but also contain a hearty dose of vitamin C.

Apple stuffed honey glazed salmon

Ingredients:

1/2 pound Salmon cut in half lengthwise

1 apple

2 tbsp. honey

1 tbsp. parsley

1 tsp. cinnamon

To prepare:

Preheat oven to 400°. Cut the apple into thin slices. In a bowl coat apple slices in 1 tablespoon honey and cinnamon.

Take apples and lay over one half of salmon. Top with other half of salmon to make a “sandwich.”

Coat top of salmon with remainder of honey.

Bake 20-25 minutes.

Note: you may want to tie a couple of strings around the salmon to hold together until cooked.

Always make sure the food is only slightly warm before serving to your dog.

Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Rosemarry:

Sweet potatoes are one of the healthiest sources of carbs you can give your furry best friend. Rosemary provides a dose of fiber and antioxidants.

Ingredients:

2 medium sized sweet potatoes

3 tbsp. rosemary

To prepare:

Preheat oven to 400°. Bake sweet potatoes until tender (approximately 35 minutes).

Removes skin and smash with a fork or potato masher. Mix in rosemary.

Always make sure the food is only slightly warm before serving to your dog.

Egg in an Acorn Squash Basket:

The acorn squash provides a health source of carbohydrates and egg is always a favorite protein source. Parsley shows up again in this side item accompanied by flaxseed which acts as a great source of omega-3 fatty acids.

Ingredients:

1/2 an acorn squash

1 egg

1 tsp. parsley

1 tsp. flaxseed

To prepare:

Preheat oven to 400°. After you have halved your acorn squash cut a small piece off the skin side to balance your acorn squash on a baking sheet. Bake 20 minutes.

Canine-friendly Green Bean “Casserole”:

This side dish contains yogurt (known to help your pooch with his/her digestion), green beans and mushrooms.

Ingredients:

2 cups frozen green beans

2 tbsp. plain yogurt

1 cup mushrooms, finely chopped

3 tbsp. panko bread crumbs

2 tbsp. olive oil

To prepare:

In a small skillet cook the green beans until tender. In a separate sauce pan cook the mushrooms with 1 tablespoon olive oil.

Brown panko in a pan with remainder of olive oil.

Let both green beans and mushrooms cool. Once cool toss green beans with mushrooms and green beans with yogurt. Top with panko.

Note: I do not usually give Ruxin wheat products like panko, but this was a very small amount that seemed to not effect him whatsoever. Depending on how severe your dog’s food allergy is you may want to omit this ingredient.

Always make sure the food is only slightly warm before serving to your dog.

Total time: 20 minutes Prep: 5 minutes Bake: 15 minutes

Comments:

I made all four dishes at the same time and cook time was right at one hour.

I think this feast was devoured in record time! They most certainly seemed happy and grateful. Since Brent and I are vegetarians, Ruxin has figured out that when fish is made it’s going in his belly so the moment he smells it he begins to get really excited. I think the apple addition really put this dish over the top for him.

This recipe served (2) 60 lbs. dogs 1 serving each. Depending on the size of your dog it may make more or less servings.

Please note that these meals are not intended to supplement your dog’s diet, but offers a “treat” to them once or twice a week.
